North Lake College
2 Year Survey Program …Status Report
The 5 Survey courses for the Spring
semester at North Lake College are fully enrolled. This is important for
the overall program and its development into a full-fledged 2 year Survey
program. The uphill battle to create the 2 year program is not over, but
John Pierce is hoping that the Fall semester of 2009 may be the official
beginning of the program. In the meantime, the survey courses are fully
accredited college courses, recognized by the TBPLS, and transferable to
other existing 2 year programs across the State. John has also been working
to find a cooperative university that can team with North Lake College for a
4 year degree program. Stay tuned for further news, but more importantly,
please continue to support the program by encouraging your paraprofessionals
to attend the classes.

---The January meeting had
a strong turnout, with 50+ attendees. Pat Smith provided great insight into
the legislative process, and how TSPS deals with those issues. Pat said that
there are no known issues that might affect Surveyors this session, but that
we must carefully monitor activities. He also urged anyone interested in
being part of the Legislative Alert Team contact Anne Glasgow. Michael
Parker stressed communication as a key for Surveyors to keep advancing the
---Several new RPLS’s and SIT’s were recognized for their achievement. In
attendance were new SIT Ryan Reynolds, and new RPLS’s Jason
Thompson and Rene Salinas.

---Past Chapter President Robert Schneeberg was presented a Service
Award in recognition and appreciation for his leadership of Chapter 5 during
2007-08. Under Robert’s leadership, Chapter 5 was designated as the “Star
Chapter” for it’s activities and leadership.
---The Chapter Board of Directors met prior to the meeting,
discussing a variety of topics, including SkillsUSA activities and upcoming
competitions; the Annual Golf Tournament; a new summer or fall social event;
a request to promote The Short Course if held in the DFW area; Chapter
involvement in mapping an old railroad watering depot; updates on
membership; newsletter ad rates; and Chapter financial status.
Technician exam prep classes continue…..
The Dallas Chapter offers Certified
Survey Technician Level I and Level II examination prep sessions prior to
every monthly meeting. John Pierce leads this effort, held prior
to regular monthly Chapter meetings at the Cantina Laredo Restaurant
(southeast corner of Inwood Road/Lover’s Lane, next to the Inwood Theater)
from 5-6pm. This is an excellent opportunity for both office and field
staff to familiarize themselves and prepare for the various Certification
exams. There is no cost to attend, and all are welcome to attend and
participate. Next scheduled session will be before the February 10th
Chapter meeting at Cantina Laredo Restaurant (5-6pm). For
questions/info, contact John Pierce at 214-532-1667.
The next CST exam date is tentatively
set for Saturday March 14. Now is the time to get registered and prepared
for the exam. Contact John Pierce for details/info.
SIT & RPLS Exam Study Groups
The SIT/RPLS Exam Study Groups will soon
regroup to begin preparation for the April exams. In the meantime,
candidates should organize their study materials and outline a study
schedule. Also, attending the Certified Survey Technician exam prep classes
before the Chapter 5 monthly meetings is another good way to keep tuned in
to subject matter. Contact Jason Jernigan (214-346-6204) for
information regarding the Study Groups and schedule
Lost & Found
I found some surveying equipment along
Ridge Road (FM 740) on Friday evening 02/20/2009 and it was still there on
Saturday morning so I took it home with me. I would like to return this to
its rightful owner. Please call/email me with the proper description and I
will arrange to get it back to you.

has been working hard to
help prepare the Duncanville High School survey students for their upcoming
District level competition, to be held on Friday February 13th at
Duncanville High School. The top two teams will move on to a regional
competition. Volunteers are needed to assist with judging and other
duties. If interested, contact Tim at 972-226-8181.
With new Chapter leaders comes the need
for continued participation by Chapter members. The strength of any
volunteer organization is only as strong as the participation of its
members. Committees are always in need of people to lead and contribute.
There are typically 5 standing committees: Membership, Program, Public
Relations & Education, Nominating, and Audit. In addition, the President
can assign a Special Committee (such as SkillsUSA) if so desired. If you
are interested in being part of the solution and helping our Chapter and
profession move forward, please contact any of the Chapter officers.
If you would like to offer an article or
share some news or information, you are more than welcome to do so. The
